No recordaba haber empezado a hacerlo.
Lunes. 3:12. Un ruido en el pasillo. La silla estaba frente a mi cama.
Martes. Barro junto a la puerta. No llovió.
A veces lloraba. A veces suplicaba.
Tres golpes.
La puerta se abrió sola.
No había nadie.

No me iba a quedar a esperar. Yo ya sé cómo terminan mis cuentos.
Perdió todo un martes
Alma Rocío Bernal Trujillo
Elena perdió todo un martes.
Primero la casa. Luego el trabajo. Luego Marcos.
Al principio ordenó la pérdida. Hizo listas.
Después empezó a guardar.
Entonces empezó a contestarse.
No grita.
Amanece. El reloj marca las 3:07 a.m.
Entiendo, entonces, que no hay amanecer. Que nunca hubo. Que la casa, la cama, el espejo… Todo es el otro lado.
Me levanto.

—Hijo —dijo—, llevas mucho tiempo dormido.
Siete pies descalzos
Andy Lay Glez Corcho
No había nadie.
No había nadie.
Michela De Martino
Y no sé si alguna vez me fui.
El mejor momento del día
Javier Trescuadras

No decía palabras.
Me quedé inmóvil.
Entonces escuché mi propia voz, muy bajita,
—No abras.
—No abras —repitió mi voz.
No dormí.
Me acerqué.
Mi reflejo no estaba llorando.
Toc toc toc, volvió a sonar.
Pero si no hacía nada, morirían ambos.
Se lanzó al agua.
Años después, despertaba empapado en sudor, siempre a medianoche.
La misma pesadilla.
El mismo rostro, hundiéndose en la oscuridad.
Y siempre aquellas palabras,
—Ven a por mí.
Pérdida
Ygnacio Moreno Gonzales
Nadie me mira.
Sepultamos a mi padre.
Otra puerta.
Magdalena se arrancó los audífonos. Reclamó a servicio técnico. Nadie dio respuesta.
Elsiton Alberto Blanco Reyes
Tan sólo no me pude detener.
Nunca me hubiera arrepentido.
—No hable, tranquilo…
Me miran. Quieren volver a salir. Tengo miedo de dormir.
Oscuro
Joss
Pronto vendrán a rescatarme.
Carlos Alberto Morles Quintero
Bandera
Arturo Eduardo Medina Oliveros
—Elena…
No dormí. A la mañana pregunté al encargado. Me miró extrañado.
—Señora, usted vive sola. Ese departamento está vacío desde hace años.
La tercera noche dejé la luz encendida. Los golpes comenzaron a medianoche. Tres. Después, un silencio largo.
—Elena…
Me miré.
Mi reflejo sonrió antes que yo.
Y susurró,
—Por fin me dejaste salir.
La mirada
Gustavo Lopez
—No te detengas.
Mientras no hagas tu primer trabajo, no vuelvas a llamarme papá.
A la noche siguiente regresó a la mansión.
El portón estaba abierto.
Extrañado, bajó del automóvil. Nadie salió a recibirlo.
Ahora me atormenta.
Acaba conmigo. Me harías un favor.
—Apártese, por el amor de Dios. Se hará daño.
—No puedes, maldito cobarde.
—¡A callar, infernales criaturas! —dice.
No hubo carcajada.
Jose Antonio Prades Villanueva
—¡No!

Respiro agitada y guardo silencio. Escucho la puerta cerrarse de golpe. Tocan. Me escondo.
No respondo. Se me acelera el corazón. Respiro hondo. Sudo.
No entiendo qué pasa. Yo no quería comer.
Me noto pequeño e indefenso.
Llego a casa.
He caído al piso. Fulminante infarto.
—Cariño, has estado enferma y debes recuperar fuerzas.
No soy yo
Margaret Sosa
¿Quién está ahí?
Camino. Escucho pasos. Me acerco.
Estruja, estruja, estruja. Persigue. Huye. Llama.
¡Silencio!
No soy yo.
No pude responderme.
Huida
Jeanneth Bohorquez Quevedo
Ello mencionó —He despertado.
A imagen y semejanza

The Mind’s Alarms
3:12
Sandra Luján Orsatti
Ever since he lived alone, Martín left a chair by the door.
He didn’t remember when he started doing it.
His therapist had asked him to write down what happened during the nights he later couldn’t piece together.
Monday. 3:12. A noise in the hallway. The chair was in front of my bed.
Tuesday. Mud by the door. It didn’t rain.
Wednesday. Someone wrote «Don’t look» on the mirror.
Martín ran his finger over the letters. They were damp.
Or so he thought.
On Thursday, he woke up at 3:12.
There was someone sitting in the chair.
He couldn’t see their face.
«Who are you?»
The figure slowly raised a finger and pointed to the notebook.
Martín turned on the light.
The chair was empty.
The notebook, open on the table, had a new sentence:
«Don’t trust what you see when you wake up.»
Martín closed his eyes.
He waited.
When he opened them again, the chair was still empty.
He smiled, relieved.
Then he noticed he was sitting in it.
In front of him, someone was writing in the notebook.
And he recognized his own handwriting.
Friday. 3:12. Martín still believes he lives alone.
The Man Who Listened to His Own Death
Agustín Pablo Juárez
Every night, at 3:17, someone whispers my name from under the bed.
At first, I thought it was a dream.
Then I recognized my voice.
«Don’t open your eyes.»
I obeyed.
For months I heard the same warning. Sometimes I cried. Sometimes I begged. One early morning I asked,
«Who are you?»
The answer came from under the bed,
«You.»
Since then, he began telling me what was going to happen.
He told me that one night I would wake up at 3:17, walk to the kitchen, and find a knife on the table.
That I would hear three knocks on the door.
That I would open it.
That someone would slit my throat.
I waited for that night in terror.
At 3:17, I woke up.
The knife was on the table.
Three knocks.
The door opened on its own.
There was no one there.
Then I felt the blade pierce my throat.
I fell.
Right before I died, I heard my own voice from under the bed,
«Don’t open your eyes.»
I opened them.
He was still under the bed.
And he had been dead for years.
Small World
Analia Romero Martín
When I was little, Mom told me there were no tiny people inside the wooden radio like I thought.
After her lie about Santa Claus, I found her to be an untrustworthy woman.
Five decades later, the repairman stated that the device is too old to work.
I peek through the grille cloth…
Not a single voice can be heard.
They have all died…
Avid Reader
Florencia Lippo
I woke up inside one of my stories, in my childhood home.
They knocked on the door, but I didn’t answer so the action wouldn’t begin. I looked around the kitchen for a knife and cut my arms, opening my veins until enough blood started pouring out.
I wasn’t going to stick around and wait. I already know how my stories end.
She Lost Everything on a Tuesday
Alma Rocío Bernal Trujillo
Elena lost everything on a Tuesday.
First the house. Then her job. Then Marcos.
At first, she organized the loss. She made lists. She sold whatever was left. She slept on the floor of her old living room because she still had the key.
Then she started keeping things.
She kept the sound of the refrigerator before they took it away. She kept the exact way Marcos said her name. She repeated everything out loud so it wouldn’t slip away.
One night, she realized she could no longer remember if the voice she was repeating was his or her own imitating him.
So she began answering herself.
She would ask if she had locked the door properly. She would answer yes, in Marcos’s voice. She would laugh with her boss’s laugh. She would cry with her mother’s voice.
Now the house is empty, but Elena is finally full. Everyone she lost lives inside, and they no longer let her leave.
The 3:07 Reflection
Llemel López Torres
I wake up at 3:07 a.m. Again. The clock has shown the exact same time for nine nights straight. I get up, walk to the bathroom, and avoid looking in the mirror. But today I do. I just want to see if he’s still there. If he’s still me.
My reflection has its back to me.
He doesn’t scream. He doesn’t move. He’s just there, facing away, breathing with my chest. I raise my right hand. He raises his left. I smile. He doesn’t. He only watches me with a calm that doesn’t belong to me.
«Almost,» my reflection whispers, with my voice but without moving his mouth, «I can almost come out.»
I run back to bed. I cover myself with the blankets like a child. I hear footsteps inside the wall. I hear my own breathing from the outside. Someone is breathing my air. Someone is taking my place.
Morning breaks. The clock says 3:07 a.m.
I understand, then, that there is no sunrise. That there never was. That the house, the bed, the mirror… Everything is the other side.
I get up. I walk to the bathroom. This time I don’t avoid the mirror.
My reflection looks at me from the real world, pale, exhausted, with dark bags under his eyes from nine sleepless nights.
«Please,» he cries, «let me in.»
And I, at last, from the other side, smile.
What a Serial Killer Looks Like
Gustavo Calanni
«I have to stop looking like a serial killer,» he thinks. He looks at himself in the mirror and feels that his hunched posture, unkempt hair, and faded clothes don’t help. The hair and clothes are the hardest things for him to change; he lacks good taste and never managed to look normal. He awkwardly tries to comb his hair with his hands, but the final result makes him look just as stupid as the first. It’s no use, Juan. You are a weirdo.
He puts on his gloves, grabs the hammer, and pulls the thick plastic curtain shut behind him.
Eighty-nine words. Pretty good, he thinks. But he doesn’t entirely like it. Too revealing; he must be more subtle. He rereads it, deletes «thick.» He rereads it one more time, and puts it back in. He titles it «What a Serial Killer Really Looks Like.» An adverb in the title. He takes it out and puts it in a couple of times, ultimately ending up removing it.
How many people does it take to be considered a serial killer? He’d love to look it up, but he knows that in the long run, that kind of search could be counterproductive. Besides, eighteen should be enough, he thinks; whenever he does it, he gets turned on. He puts on his gloves, grabs the hammer, and pulls the thick plastic curtain shut behind him.
After-Dinner Talk
Priscila Guerra Luzuriaga
The smell of soup, the murmur of conversation—she had missed both things. She sat in silence while her brother recounted an anecdote from school.
Her mother replied, probing for more details. Her grandfather slurped his soup loudly. She listened and laughed when she was supposed to.
Her grandfather coughed occasionally. Her mother asked him to be careful when swallowing.
Her brother was now talking about his most recent girlfriend. How fast he had grown up.
Her mother’s hair seemed grayer.
The conversation was so entertaining that she had no desire to start eating.
«Drink your soup,» her mother ordered.
«But if I drink it, the conversation ends,» she replied, reluctant.
«Yes,» her mother said, «that is the point.»
«But I don’t want to. It hasn’t been enough time,» she insisted.
Her mother fell silent. Her brother looked at her sadly. Her grandfather lay asleep against his chair.
«Mom,» she tried again.
No one answered.
She picked up the spoon, dipped it into the warm liquid, and brought it to her mouth. She tasted the soup while closing her eyes for a moment.
When she opened them, the chairs sat empty, and in front of her were three dusty plates.
The Mirror
Julio César Aguilar
Ever since his mother died, Daniel avoided looking at himself in the hallway mirror. He couldn’t explain why. Every time he passed in front of it, he felt that something, on the other side of the glass, was watching in silence.
One night, while brushing his teeth, he heard three knocks.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
They came from the mirror. Daniel looked up. His reflection was there, motionless. He raised his hand. The reflection didn’t. Daniel stepped back. Then his reflection smiled.
«Mom wants you to come back,» it whispered.
Daniel felt his legs trembling.
«My mother is dead.»
The reflection slowly tilted its head.
«That’s what you think.»
The lights started flickering. Daniel ran toward the door, but found the hallway completely dark. Behind him, the mirror creaked. When he turned around, he saw his mother standing next to the reflection. She was wearing the dress she had been buried in.
«Son,» she said, «you’ve been asleep for a long time.»
Daniel closed his eyes.
When he opened them, he was standing in front of the mirror. On the other side, a man was desperately pounding on the glass. Daniel smiled. For the first time, he felt no fear. His mother took his hand. And turned off the light.
Seven Bare Feet
Andy Lay Glez Corcho
I woke up at 3:07 a.m. because someone breathed inside my ear. There was no one there. My dog was sleeping on the floor, stiff, eyes wide open, as if he’d been dead for hours. The air smelled of damp earth and old coins.
I tried to turn on the light. The switch gave way with a soft snap, like a broken bone. Then I heard it, my own voice, whispering from the hallway.
«Don’t open the door.»
But I lived alone. There was no door at the end of the hallway, only a wall. That night, for the first time, there was a door. Underneath it, a shadow of bare feet waited. I counted six. Then seven.
The handle slowly turned. On the other side, someone cried with my throat. I felt the cold creep up my legs, like black water. I tried to scream, but my mouth was already sewn shut with someone else’s breath.
The door opened. There was no one. Only me, standing there, looking at myself from the inside, with a smile that was much too wide.
«You can wake up now,» my voice said.
But I was already awake.
Autolytic
Sebastián Serrano
I will never forget his hideous face! That fateful October night, the living room of my house ended up turned into a lake of blood, where the flayed bodies of my parents lay; in the kitchen, the severed body of my sister Laura was scattered everywhere; even Milaneso, our mutt puppy, lay stabbed and eyeless in the hallway. He was still whimpering, for all the life hadn’t escaped him yet! What kind of monster could have done that?
I was weeping softly under my bed, praying internally for the killer not to find me, while asking myself, «Why did my family let him into our home? Why did they feed him? Why did they take care of him? Why did they love him? Why…»
A strong hand grabbed me by the feet and dragged me out of bed, then placed me in front of him and he started stabbing me over and over and over again. Blood began to pour from my body! I would soon perish…
The last thing I remember was that, in the mirror located across from my bed, I saw how I was stabbing myself.
The Boy Who Doesn’t Blink
Eugenio Barragán Fuentes
The afternoon sun dyes the park with autumn hues. An inexplicable chill gives Carlos goosebumps. From the bench, he watches a boy playing alone next to the slide. He has been looking at him for ten minutes and something makes him uncomfortable: the little boy doesn’t blink. Not even once.
He walks up to the railing. The boy stops his shovel, lifts his head, and fixes dry, overly wide eyes on him.
«Don’t you get tired of holding them like that?» Carlos asks, trying to sound casual.
The boy answers without moving a muscle.
«I’m practicing for when you stop doing it.»
Carlos laughs, nervous. He leaves quickly, feeling like he’s been watched from a place without time.
Hours later, before going to bed, he enters the bathroom. When he looks up at the mirror, he freezes. His reflection looks back at him with unnatural clarity. The liquid mercury flows, ripples, creates waves. He tries to close his eyelids, but they don’t obey.
The boy wasn’t practicing. It was a warning.
The Echo of the Scalpel
Michela De Martino
The operating room smelled of formaldehyde and rotten lies. Aurora didn’t need to turn on the light to know that the corpse on the steel slab was that of her own conscience.
«You can’t stay quiet anymore,» she whispered, grazing an invisible scar that crossed the sternum with the cold tip of the scalpel.
Outside, on the other side of the blind door, Alfredo kept quiet. He knew the dead don’t lie, but the living build mausoleums with the pieces of what they once were. Every millimeter-precise cut into the inert flesh unearthed a forbidden name, a face forcibly erased by the system.
The metal vibrated between her trembling fingers. It wasn’t blood staining the gloves; it was time, thick and viscous, returning to collect its debt. Aurora stared deep into the open cavity and understood the true sentence: hell wasn’t underground, but engraved in the DNA. And the next body on the table… bore her exact name.
Internship in Hell
Evelio Alejandro Morejón Pérez
I wake up in a room I don’t recognize. The lights from a silver chandelier fall over my body, suspended in a bed with transparent curtains. The floor is padded with a red, old carpet, like from another era. The walls are covered with wallpaper that matches the curtains.
In each corner there is a statue: a wolf, an owl, a jackal, a toad. They point at me with their hideous faces. Above their heads, brightly colored feathers make them look ridiculous. But when I get closer, I discover they are artificial feathers, made of human hair, hardened by a paste that is still wet. At the base, a taxidermied skin with black signs my eyes can’t read.
A second skin covers my body. My genitals have disappeared. I try to tear off the mass suffocating me. Beneath the skin, my intestines move. My nipples are oozing holes.
Then I see it. At the headboard, a figure with large fingers holds semi-transparent strings that lead down to my body. My gaze follows them. My flesh follows them. The figure smiles.
My heart stops beating. My eyes close.
But I’m still here. And I don’t know if I ever left.
The Best Part of the Day
Javier Trescuadras
I never call her by her name. It’s easier. I refer to her as honey, sweetheart, or darling… Contrary to what one might think, it’s dehumanizing. A person is left with absolutely no identity if you call them honey. She’s no longer Rosa. She has just become a human bandage that belongs to you, while she thinks you’re being affectionate. While she thinks we’re going to a fancy restaurant and I mentally review if I have everything I need in the trunk—rope, duct tape, zip ties, an ax and, of course, the shovel… I fantasize about the moment when she, the one chosen for tonight after days of following her, stalking her, and studying her, discovers that we’re going nowhere but a dark place in the woods. Everything changes there. The shock of the deceit, the feeling that something bad is going to happen makes her pulse race. That’s the moment I like the most, when her brain reaches the conclusion that she’s not going back home. Some struggle or scratch or negotiate. They promise they won’t tell anyone if I let them go.
«If I let you go…» I usually reply with a wolfish smile, «What kind of serial killer would I be?»
The best part of the day.
I Murdered My Beloved
Wagner Ricardo Guerra Capuena
Then I remembered that hours earlier I had gouged out my own eyes to stop seeing her.
And even so, I kept seeing her.
The Quicksilver Prison
Néstor Rubén Giménez
The alarm clock drills through the early morning. I drag myself to the bathroom, turn on the light, and rest my hands on the sink. When I look up, my reflection doesn’t mirror my gesture; with a mocking smirk, it holds my gaze.
I blink in surprise for a second.]
I try to press my palms against the mirror, but they don’t meet it. The glass has lost its hardness and is a thick gelatin that swallows my forearms with the greed of a swamp. In vain I struggle and fall silent as I feel the terror freezing my breath.
Then, the doppelgänger pulls me violently and drags my body into his territory. From the other side, I watch him finish grooming himself naturally.
He turns around and leaves with what used to be my footsteps.
The door closes behind him. Now I am here, a prisoner in the bowels of the quicksilver. The silver surface turns opaque, cold, and final. Out there beats the world that no longer belongs to me; in here, the only company is the echo of my eyes pleading with nothingness. But the other guy has it worse; he doesn’t know what he got himself into, he’ll soon understand how unbearable it is to deal with my day.
The Mirror
Jorge Antonio Tisera
For the past three nights, I’ve heard someone crying in the room next door.
The problem is I live alone.
At first, I thought it was a neighbor. Then I recognized the voice.
It was mine.
It didn’t say words. It only cried, with that sadness one tries to hide even from oneself.
Last night I pounded on the wall.
The crying stopped.
Three knocks answered from the other side.
I stood frozen.
Then I heard my own voice, very softly,
«Don’t open it.»
I stepped back.
My bedroom door started moving slowly, as if someone were pushing from the outside.
«Don’t open it,» my voice repeated.
But this time it was coming from under the bed.
I didn’t sleep.
This morning I gathered my courage and went to the room next door.
I opened it.
It was empty.
There was only a mirror leaning against the wall.
I stepped closer.
My reflection wasn’t crying.
It was smiling.
And behind it, in the mirror, someone was desperately pounding on the glass.
It was me.
Then I understood.
The one who lived alone wasn’t me.
I was the one locked inside.
Somewhat Strange
Rosa Esperanza Sánchez Gracia
The neighbor in 7A never goes inside his apartment. He just watches us from the hallway. He learned my name, my laugh, my way of walking. Last night I heard him in my kitchen, in the dark, practicing how to be me.
When I turned on the light, he had my face on backward and was smiling at me with my own mouth. I admit now why I found him somewhat strange…
Unwanted Visit
José Fidel Chávez
Knock knock knock… the knocks sounded on the door.
Lying on the couch, I turned down the music volume to hear better.
Knock knock knock, it sounded again.
It surprised me because of the time; maybe an annoyed neighbor complaining about the music.
Knock knock knock… the knocking insisted.
Upon opening, there was no one, and the street was deserted.
Something pushed me and knocked me to the floor, at the same time the door closed.
I don’t know why I knocked on the door, knock knock knock… Then I saw myself inside the house. I screamed, but the me inside did nothing but draw the curtains and turn off the lights.
Resonance
Claudia Sánchez
At first it was barely a graze, like fingernails against plaster. I thought it was my imagination, but every night the sound grew, in rhythm with my breathing. I stepped closer and discovered the wall was beating.
I tried to ignore it, covered my ears, slept in another room. Nothing worked. The murmur continued, repeating my name, imitating my thoughts. A parallel voice, identical to mine, whispered what I was going to do before I did it.
One early morning, tired of running, I punched the wall. It bled. The dark liquid slid slowly and the murmur turned into a cackle, as if it had finally been discovered.
Now I no longer know if I am inside the house or if the house is inside me. Every word I utter repeats in an echo, as if someone else were living in my head.
Today I write these lines to leave a record: it isn’t me who is thinking. I am being thought. And when the wall decides to speak out loud, no one will be able to tell who is answering.
Heartbeats
Allan Castillo
And, even though her unfaithful lover’s heart was still beating strongly in her hands, she devoured it without remorse.
Synchrony
Luis Fernando Jiménez Cervantes
He stopped in front of him.
There was something familiar about that face: the curve of the eyelid, the breathing, the exhaustion in every crease of the skin.
He searched for a name among the rubble of memory, but found none.
The man on the other side mimicked his bewilderment.
They stood looking at each other.
Then they smiled at the same time and went back to the farce of pretending they didn’t know each other.
The Relief
Rosalía Guerrero Jordán
Dusk was falling when I went down to stroll along the beach. The sky tangled with the purplish clouds and a huge orange dot set the horizon on fire.
I walked barefoot, savoring the pleasure the sand produced on my feet, until a tremendously sad melody caressed my ears. Near the shore was the old man who, hours before, had been begging on the promenade. He played his accordion with rapture, which he interrupted upon sensing my presence.
I sat beside him and he told me his life story, his lost loves and frustrated business deals. It was already dead of night when he stood up, entrusted me with the instrument and, saying goodbye, walked into the dark waters. I tried to hold him back, but I couldn’t. He only said, «Let me leave, it is your turn now.»
Today, after so many years, I am still the one playing the accordion on the beach, while I watch that young man walking barefoot toward me.
The Choice
Nuria Hernández García
The sea was taking them both, each in a different direction. They were at the exact same distance.
Never had making a choice been so terrifying.
He wasn’t God to decide who should live. But if he did nothing, both would die.
He dove into the water.
Years later, he would wake up drenched in sweat, always at midnight.
The same nightmare.
The same face, sinking into the darkness.
And always those words:
«Come get me.»
Loss
Ygnacio Moreno Gonzales
They burst into the classroom violently. Without saying a word, they took them. «They’re my pupils,» the teacher protested. She couldn’t stop them from taking them away. She moved toward the exit, guessing the way, blind.
Stalker
Ana María Abad García
Lately I have the unsettling feeling that my reflection is up to something. I feel how he stalks me from every shop window, from every puddle; he watches me even in the elevator. Yesterday I caught his malevolent gaze in the car’s rearview mirror. Today, fed up, I confront the bathroom mirror and yell at him. The wicked gleam in his eyes as he rests the straight razor against his neck turns my blood cold.
Walk
Natalia Restrepo Maya
When they took him for a walk in the afternoon, in his head he pictured the park, the children his age having fun, the swings and the monkey bars… when they arrived at the site, he couldn’t stop a tear from escaping and sliding down his cheeks.
Amidst the flowers and the tombstones, he was able to read his name on the freshly carved marble.
At the Gates
Lorenzo Isaac Santana
Every night, before going to bed, he checked the clock. Not for the time, but out of fear.
He went to bed knowing he might not wake up. Not from death, but from something worse: waking up and discovering that nothing had changed.
The fan spun as always. The same stained ceiling. The same smell of dampness. The same empty fridge, the same salary that wasn’t enough, the same breadline, the same faces on all the neighbors, the same helplessness.
He closed his eyes, praying silently.
He dreamed that he was flying. That he crossed the sea. That he woke up somewhere else where no one knew his name or his history.
He opened his eyes.
The fan. The ceiling. The dampness.
He screamed, but no one came. He cried, but no one heard.
Then he understood his sentence: it wasn’t to die. It was to wake up every day in the same life, at the gates of an exit that never opened.
And even so, he went back to sleep. Because tomorrow, maybe, the dream would last a little longer.
Big Bang
Enrique Alberto Lara
I walk down the pedestrian street among unknown faces coming and going. Some stop to look at the shop windows; a little boy chases a pigeon.
I think I am dead. No one looks at me. To confirm it, I try to walk through one of them, but seeing me advance, he steps aside.
So they are dead too, I tell myself.
When I get to work I’ll be able to prove it. There are people from different neighborhoods there; they couldn’t have all died.
But when I arrive they greet me like always, I sit at my desk, and everything proceeds with the same routine as every day.
We are all dead.
The explosion was bigger than I imagined.
The Other One
José Manuel Dorrego Sáenz
Every time my twin sister comes into the room and sees me, she screams in terror. After two years, she still won’t accept that, out of the two of us, she was the one who died in the accident.
The Angel
Rosa Elena Gómez
We buried my father. He had been very affectionate with Marcos and me when we were left alone. That day another pain began. My son pressed himself against my side and whispered in fear, «That angel is looking at me.» The statue on the neighboring mausoleum seemed to be staring at him. I squeezed his hand and brushed it off. A few days later, strange things started happening. Doors closing before touching them; Marcos had nightmares, he was haggard and skinny. He claimed he saw shadows in his room, his homework blew off the desk, and other things. I got worried when I saw his urine was dark, almost black. Neither the doctor nor the priest believed me. An old woman from the neighborhood advised me to have him blessed. Marcos grew worse by the day. I went to the cemetery to ask who was buried in the angel’s mausoleum. A wicked little boy who died at age ten, the exact same age as Marcos. I felt sheer terror. I prayed to my father to help him, to get that demon away from my son, who at that moment on his knees was asking him for the exact same thing. That night there was a massive storm.
The door to my father’s tomb was wide open, and the angel lay on the ground, smashed to pieces.
Last Thought
Fabiola Morales
Magdalena paid to hear the last thought of her brother Julián, who had drowned weeks before amid a dense swell,
«It wasn’t the water! Something looked at me from below!»
Then came an ancient, massive whisper.
«At last! Another door.»
Magdalena ripped off her headphones. She complained to technical support. No one gave an answer. That night the voice returned inside her head,
«Thank you for opening.»
She investigated. Every log ended the same way: the murmur that the application would delete. An echo was growing. It was inside her. She heard herself say,
«I can’t close the door.»
She woke up screaming. On her screen, hundreds, thousands of files resonated. At the end of each one, the same lugubrious voice asking,
«What does it feel like to be alive?»
Magdalena wanted to flee, but her mouth moved on its own,
«Thank you for the door. It’s open!»
And something, on the other side of the screen, smiled.
And His Body Was Made of Flowers
Patricia Rojas de Leunda
And over time he kept fraying until nothing was left of him but a withered flower seeking shade in her pubis.
Someone Is Knocking
Alex Zelaya
Knock, Knock.
It is midnight.
Someone is knocking at the door. Always at the same time. I get up and go to it; I look through the peephole.
There he is.
The same silhouette, the same shadow drawn under the faint light of the lamp.
«It’s not time yet!» I whisper, «Come back tomorrow!»
I walk away from the door and go back to bed.
He will return.
He always returns.
After all, it was me who asked him to do it.
Christmas Dinner
Elsiton Alberto Blanco Reyes
The cold is relentless. The simmering hot chocolate is finally ready. Peaceful, she looks at the wall clock. It’s not late. A quarter to ten at night. Right at that time her first baby was born. He’d be turning one year old today, she thinks with a discreet smile.
The twelve-pound turkey has already been roasted. She bought it at the El Guarda market. It was overpriced, but she didn’t care, because they gave her some pretty good cash for the convertible crib, too.
Intrusion
Antonio Arjona Huelgas
Nobody believed that it hadn’t been my fault. I just couldn’t stop myself. Even if you don’t believe me, it wasn’t the first time I’d had an intrusive thought, but nothing had ever happened. I had imagined the exact same thing other times. And, I swear, I had never done anything. My head was working perfectly yesterday. I know it sounds horrible, but I wouldn’t do it again. With the right treatment I can get better. Don’t you see it? Did none of you ever imagine how funny it would be to see the kid fall from the bridge? It looked like a cartoon scene. I just snatched him from his mother, grabbed him by the arms, and dropped him straight down. I didn’t even know about the truck. Do you think I was paying that much attention? Am I the only one who thought it was funny? Why aren’t you laughing?
A Promise Is a Promise
Tamara Bermúdez Rodríguez
I felt someone breathe on the back of my neck; I took off running without looking back. Panting and drenched by the rain I got home, barely able to open the door. Safe inside, and without even drying myself off, I peeked through a crack in the window. I saw nothing. I managed to calm down, but not to sleep. I searched the internet for similar experiences…, nothing. Then, thinking I was crazy and that it had been a gust of wind from the rain, and the fear of walking alone in the dark, I promised, «Never again will I tempt fate!» And my life went on normally; I no longer even remembered the horrible nocturnal episode, much less my promise. And that’s why I agreed to go out with some friends; I needed it! I never would have regretted it. I danced and drank without sanity; I felt free, without fear! On my way back, right at my front door, I heard footsteps, and then a chilling sensation on my neck. It wasn’t that breathing, no! It was something unknown, it was… hot, gushing out in spurts. I tried to stop it with my hands, but it increased with every breath on the nape of my neck. It didn’t rain that night, and it was too late to understand. I laid there…, tossed in a thick puddle, drenched and cold.
The Man of Clay
Mario Lamo
He gathered his scattered bones one by one; the death had been long and cold. Like an improvised sculptor, he carefully tried to rebuild his body with the mud that covered him. He didn’t know how long it took him to recreate his human figure, since time had stopped running for him; it could just as well have been four centuries or four minutes.
He dug to get out of his deathbed; he felt the cold, damp earth, but as he neared the surface he experienced that strange, warm sensation coursing through his bones and stirring his heart. He didn’t dare open his eyes, fearful they would never see the light.
«Wake up, sir, wake up,» he heard a voice calling him.
«I… I… I remember,» the words struggled to come out of his mouth.
«Don’t speak, stay calm… You’re all covered in mud. Don’t worry, we’re going to help you,» the woman said, and immediately yelled, «Manuelito, bring me the hose.»
He wanted to scream no, but the words got stuck in his throat. The stream of water scattered his body across the dirt, and his bones turned to dust descended in a silver thread down the street, on their way, this time for sure, to eternity.
The Tenant
Chara Lattuf
He would enter the rooms and screams and gunshots were heard; only the walls separated them from one another. From the Torres family, María watched her notebooks thrown on the floor and her crying wouldn’t stop. José Cienfuegos, the tenant, had cornered the teenager’s parents along with her brother in a tiny, dark squalid room. José, who arrived along with others from distant lands permitted by the Municipality to host them. Thus the town of La Esperanza was losing its houses and lands to people who wore a cap and a bracelet with a star. Their long weapons detonated bullets that struck the skin without penetrating, but some deformed the face and blinded the eyes.
Then the nearby Municipalities gathered as the news reached them, shocking workers, students, authorities, and everyone who heard about those from the distant lands, who claim to have a mandate from God to expand as far as there are no boundaries. They reached an agreement that whenever they hear screams in the neighbors’ houses, they would place a cap and a starred bracelet on their heads to look like one of them. Even so they do not surrender, and for every wounded one, they plant a seedling, enduring this way through time.
I’m Afraid to Sleep
Emilio Aburto Casillas
I am afraid to go back to sleep. I don’t know if it’ll be me who wakes up. The voices in my head won’t shut up. And the worst part is that now those voices are starting to be seen in my mirror. They watch me. They want to come back out. I’m afraid to sleep.
Dark
Joss
At 3 a.m., the screams of despair shattered the silence of the night. Help! I opened my eyes and I could see them devouring his body. Leave him! I yelled desperately. I got up, walked toward the shadows, and upon seeing myself lying in my bed I screamed Wake up!
One more night of sleep paralysis.
The Night Man
Viviana Miranda
What a heavy morning; the alarm goes off and although I always turn it off on the first ring, I feel tired. The heaviness of yesterday hasn’t yet gotten off my shoulders.
I stand up and move to the couch, waiting for the heater to do its job. Oh divine sleep! As soon as my upper eyelids touch my lower lashes I feel a great rest.
I always sleep a while longer on the couch; this time something changes. The living room is round; I have a premonition that I’m not alone, someone is watching over my sleep. The feeling makes me open my eyes; to my great surprise, there wasn’t anybody.
The pill I take at night makes it impossible for me to leave this rest; I don’t want to keep dreaming anymore, I resist but my body is tired, resulting in sleep paralysis.
With the greatest of efforts I half-open my eyes; a man leaning forward at 90 degrees right in front of me was watching me. I know what I saw.
He had no face; he’s just like a shadow with a pair of sapphires where his eyes should be. Even so, his gaze is unprecedented; it falls upon my memory as I write this.
Upon opening my eyes completely, the shadow dissipates; exactly at 6:02 in the morning the dawn gives its first glance, illuminating the house. I don’t know if it was a dream; I just know that everything ended at the moment of daybreak.
That’s why I decided to name him, because I know it was the first time he showed up, but it won’t be the last. He will be The Night Man.
System Error
Alejandro Levacov
System error, they call it. But they can’t fix it. There is a claim number, they pass it to him, although he can’t manage to write it down. His memory is incapable of retaining. Scraps, flashes, playing ball at twelve, a French kiss, a colossal bender. He can’t feel his nerve endings. A mistake, he repeats to calm himself down. They will come to rescue me soon. He feels an itch and would like to scratch himself. But scratch where? The voice pulls him from his musings. Member Demetrio Ramondino, are you still there? He answers yes, and even though he can’t hear his own voice, the word forms in his consciousness. They tell him to wait, to stay on the line. In that moment, the darkness swallows him.
He wakes up again and sees a tunnel. At least he is no longer surrounded by gloom. Murky waters flow down. Two rats look at him.
The larger one speaks first.
«You had us distressed.»
«We thought we were losing you,» the other completes.
He can’t determine if it shocks him more to hear two rodents talking or to remember nothing.
«They let us know that you’re likely to experience altered perceptions for a while.»
«The important thing is that they managed to bring you back.»
He looks at his hooves.
«A system error, dad.»
«It’s not your fault.»
The big rat brings him something.
«You need to feed, that way you’ll recover faster.»
Demetrio starts gnawing.
The Exit
Carlos Alberto Morles Quintero
The church door opened, they escaped. Feet of wax, of gold, of wood, of marble, sinking into the soft asphalt. The sun shatters the eyes, the crowns, the fragile clothing worn out by the shade. Angels, virgins, and saints knocked on doors, windows, started cursing, breaking things.
Naked in the middle of the street, they destroyed everything. Mad with rage, they killed their worshippers. The wind stopped, grew thick.
They went back to their niches, alone.
Waiting for the sun.
Flag
Arturo Eduardo Medina Oliveros
Every night, amidst explosions, the boy hoisted a Gazan flag on the moon.
«Mom!» he exclaimed in search of her while the flag caught fire.
The earth is an abominable silence.
The Room Next Door
Norma Beatriz Castillo
The first night I heard knocks on the wall. Three, always three. I thought it was the neighbor.
The second night, a voice whispered my name.»Elena…»
I didn’t sleep. In the morning I asked the super. He looked at me, puzzled.
«Ma’am, you live alone. That apartment has been empty for years.»
The third night I left the light on. The knocking started at midnight. Three. Then, a long silence.
«Elena…»
This time the voice sounded just like mine.
I stepped closer to the wall. I pressed my ear against it.
«Who’s there?»
«You,» it answered.
I stepped back. My phone buzzed on the table. It was a message from my own number,
«Don’t open the door.»
Then I heard the key turning in the lock.
I ran to the bedroom and hid under the covers. The door opened slowly. Footsteps crossed the hallway. They stopped by my bed.
«Elena, come out. We need to talk.»
The voice was identical to my mother’s.
My mother had been dead for ten years.
I stayed perfectly still until morning. When I finally came out, I found the apartment door open.
In the hallway, across from my house, there was a mirror.
I looked at myself.
My reflection smiled before I did.
And whispered,
«You finally let me out.»
The Gaze
Gustavo Lopez
The first time she felt someone watching her, she wanted to masturbate.
The orgasm was explosive. Since then, she never closed the curtains again.
Every night she gave herself over under a dim light. The silhouette remained motionless on the other side of the glass, as if it knew every part of her body.
One night, while undressing, a voice whispered from the gloom,
«Don’t stop.»
She kept going.
The next morning, she got up and walked over to the window.
The sunlight hit her right in the eyes. As she blinked, she made out her own face on the glass and, right behind her, the reflection of the motionless silhouette that was watching her from the darkness, hiding in a corner of her room.
The First Job
Iván Nilo Hernández
«Damn it, José! You arrive beaten up again. Your brothers are top assassins. Even our servants have killed more than you. We have the biggest bounty in the country and you just bring us shame.»
His brothers’ laughter filled the drawing room.
José lowered his head. It was always the same.
His father grabbed his coat.
«I have a meeting tomorrow. Until you do your first job, don’t ever call me dad again.»
The following night he returned to the mansion.
The gate was open.
Puzzled, he got out of the car. No one came out to greet him. There were no lights, either.
Then he caught the smell.
He walked up to the entrance and froze.
A pile of corpses blocked the door. He recognized the servants first. Then, among bloody arms and motionless faces, he spotted his sons.
«José?» he muttered.
No one answered.
He walked in trembling.
The house was empty.
On the wall of the drawing room, still wet, a word written in blood seemed to wait for him:
«Dad.»
This Room
Daniel Arazúa
That damn message was on the rearview mirror of my motorcycle, «Return home.» On the computer, instead of the company logo, appeared the order, «Return home.» I ignored it. I printed the balance sheets.
«Damn it, García! The report?»
«In your hands, sir.» I tossed the papers at him. On them, printed thousands of times was the order, «Return home…»
«Get out! Stop screwing around!»
A messenger handed me an envelope. I trembled as I opened it, «Return home.» I turned to look at the evacuation signs, «Return home…» Mía leaned in to my ear:
«I left a chocolate and a little note for you on your desk.» I went to look for the chocolate; only the note was there, «Return home.»
«Mía, what’s wrong with you? What are you talking about?»
«About this… That’s not mine…»
I ran out. The advertising billboards had that damn order, «Return home.» I went back. That message taped to the door, «Return home.» Damn it. On the television, the speakers, on the security cameras… I locked myself in a room. In the mirror, that order! Hell! I screamed… Under the door, burning shadows and distorted murmurs creep in with the same order, «Return home.» I understand that I am not home, but I cannot leave this room.
Metastasis
Edgar Fernando Carbajal López
Eduardo turned on the hot water tap in the sink. The steam began to spread all around.
While he was washing his face, some words formed on the surface of the mirror:
«His power is uncontrollable. First, my memory; now he also erases my notes to remind myself never to clean this mirror.»
Eduardo stood up straight. Water was dripping down his face. His eyes were closed. He blindly reached for a towel that wasn’t supposed to be next to him. However, his hand caught it as if it had been brought closer.
After drying off, he looked down to place the stopper at the bottom of the sink; meanwhile, his hand hurried to wipe the mirror.
He filled the sink with hot water. He moisturized his chin and cheeks with shaving cream. He tried to grab the razor, but it slipped, hitting the floor with a dull thud.
Eduardo bent down. In the mirror, a blackened reflection took shape through the dense, suffocating steam that never stopped pouring out from the rotting depths of the sink.
Household Chores
Nereidy Velásquez
While I wash the dishes, fold the clothes, or prepare the food, I hear my thoughts. But for some time now, another voice has been dictating them. I paid no attention to it until that foreign presence started contradicting everything I do. Now it torments me. I take a knife and walk to the bedroom. My husband is taking a nap; I stand at the foot of the bed, watching him. I am confused. Inside my head, a fierce war of yeses and noes breaks out. I am just waiting for the final order.
The Ring
Luis Mariano Hernandez
«Can I eat a little more, Mom?»
«Of course, son, all you want.»
«And this little piece?»
«Certainly.»
«This meat is very tender.»
«It’s from the days of resting.»
«I found a ring! Can I keep it?»
«Yes, but hurry up, they’re going to close the cemetery soon.»
Self-Worth
María Sofía Abarca
She had experienced so many romantic failures, so many tears, so much pain that, rather than seeing a psychologist, she decided to go to an exorcist.
As soon as the ritual began, the priest uttered an ancient name that gave her chills.
«You are not the problem. Neither are they. It’s him.»
The woman looked at him without understanding.
«A demon fell in love with your soul thousands of years ago, but you rejected him. Since then, he has been chasing you from one lifetime to the next. He possesses every man you love and gets all of them to use you, lie to you, and hurt you.»
She left looking down, with a desperate heart and an inexplicable fear.
She would have preferred being told she lacked self-worth.
Underground
J. Miguel Vargas Rosas
The disheveled woman, with a pale face, reddened pupils, sunken eyes, and dry lips, stared fixedly at the younger female who was watching the lit television screen. She remembered that she yelled at her almost daily, delivering heavy blows to her face; only then did she raise the metal frying pan over her shoulder, land a resounding blow against the back of the woman’s skull, and hit her up to six more times, as if her arms were moving mechanically without her giving them any order. Blood soaked the sofa and part of her haggard face, where a macabre smile seemed to shine.
The young woman’s inert body fell onto the furniture; the orange light of the dying sun bathed her face, unrecognizable from the dark-reddish blood covering it. She, the older adult, could not fathom what she had just done.
«Daughter…» she just managed to babble.
The frying pan, stained with blood, was still trembling in her hand.
The Soloist
Xadira Ramirez
After the encore, he returns to the immeasurable loneliness.
«Here you are a loser.»
«Drop that. Someone will get hurt.»
«Don’t listen to him. Finish me off. You’d be doing me a favor.»
«Step away, for the love of God. You’ll hurt yourself.»
«You can’t, you damn coward.»
«Quiet, infernal creatures!» he says. And, with a gunshot, an intimate silence is finally made in the head.
Dominoes
Silvia Bottallo
The tiles fall, one after another. But I don’t like that game. It reminds me of when Dad yells at Mom, and she squeezes my arm too hard or has no patience to braid my hair. Then I have to wake my little brother up with pinches. He dawdles, our milk gets cold, and the bus that takes us to school is about to arrive. We’re going to sit in the very back seat, far from the driver who mutters to me, says things I don’t understand and leaves me wondering. Then the teacher wants to talk to me, saying I get distracted, that my brother misbehaves, that she calls my parents and they don’t show up… Then I start crying so much that all the words drown out…
The Monster
María Horta
Sweat dripped from him like rancid lard, mixing with the grime on his belly. Aurelio weighed three hundred pounds and his presence was rotten. Nobody loved him. His wife crushed a dozen painkillers into his coffee. He drank it, spat it out, and went to bed. Twelve hours later, he reappeared with bloodshot eyes.
«I screwed you over, ha, ha, ha.»
Months later, a chicken bone got lodged in his throat. Everyone watched his asphyxiation impassively. But when his body collapsed, he coughed up the bone and let out his foul-smelling cackle. He was a despicable mass that refused to die.
Until his heart stopped. When they tried to cremate him, the oven wasn’t big enough due to his massive weight. They built him a coffin out of thick wood. During the wake, the box began to creak until the bottom gave way, dropping his green mass onto the floor.
At dawn, four men carried him toward the grave. His left foot moved stiffly. The wife fell to her knees upon seeing his jaw drop open. There was no cackle. The foot didn’t move because of life; it was the pressure of thousands of maggots devouring his guts.
A New State
Natividad Villar Martínez
While trying to surrender to sleep that night, I became aware that the silence was terribly silent; the childish voices that always continued deep into the early morning in the adjoining rooms had disappeared, the neighbor’s dogs’ barking had long since stopped being noticed, not even the tick-tock of the living room clock arrived muffled as it always did. Distressed, I got up and headed to the different rooms; everyone was asleep, and in a fake attempt to wake them, they responded neither to my shaking nor my screams. I went out to the garden; the cat that took refuge behind the hedge every night didn’t flinch at my arrival, my caresses were just empty gestures. I didn’t feel the chill of the night on my bare arms. The terror of that new state pushed me to go back up to the bedroom; in bed I covered myself with the quilt, I began to hum a lullaby that mother used to sing to me as a child to put me to sleep, and it was at that moment that a cold hand lifted the quilt leaving my body exposed; it was mother, she was somewhat paler and skinnier than before leaving us forever. She was inviting me to go with her.
Before Living
Jose Antonio Prades Villanueva
I have just found a bend in the riverbank. Large branches hide me from the attack. I am alone. Very alone. Every stone on the path I followed along the shore has left marks on my skin.
I need more shelter. I wish I could flee. I want the knot in my guts to disappear, the horror beneath my fingernails, the dry saliva on my lips.
On the floor, she broke a circle of dark blood next to my math book. She was my mother. She’ll still be there.
Now the waters are rising. I lean back on the stones to look for some sky through the branches. The cross of the bridge slides by with the river. It’s laughing. It’s pointing at me with one of its arms.
She was my mother. He was my father. In their bedroom, the bed was unmade on one side, the one without blood.
Before I could turn around, the knife pierced his heart.
Guests
Omar Elvir
About to drink my freshly poured drink, the crowd is only interested in the living room set up as a dance floor and the cumbia that demands a cast worthy of its inherent majesty.
The boy, suddenly beside me, grabs my arm and asks, «And my mom?»
I can barely contain my fright seeing what was once his face and, vaguely, I conclude that the stories about atrocious misfortunes taking place in this house are true. I am now the protagonist of one more.
The Echo of the Cedar
Brian Montero
The heavy drizzle of that year, 18…, only intensified the melancholy that had become deeply rooted in the walls of Isabel’s large house. She had the eternal company of a ghost, the echo of a voice, deep and desperate, Emiliano’s voice.
«Why, Isabel? Why did you let me drown…»
«No!» she screamed, covering her ears, but the wail was not only audible, it could be felt on the skin, like a freezing shiver.
She stopped under the large cedar that rose in the center of the orchard. Its branches, twisted and leafless, looked like a monster’s claws.
The voice seemed to come from the roots of the tree.
«Isabel! Look at my face, Isabel! Look at me! Drowned because of you!»
She felt the water.
An intense and profound cold that pierced her to the bone.
As if the very river that had taken Emiliano away was now claiming her.
They found her lifeless the next morning; Isabel was soaked under the cedar, with an expression of horror frozen on her face. The rain had stopped, but the earth around her was a quagmire, as if a sudden flood had occurred only in that small corner of the garden.
Cold Passion
Santos Arohuanca
He made love with wild abandon; he caressed the beautiful body hidden by her silk lingerie, enjoying it insatiably by stroking every crevice of it; suddenly someone knocked on the door, it was the guard, warning him to hurry up, because a new body had arrived.
See You Soon
Robinson Dávila
If you are reading this message, it is because I am already dead.
I suspected for a long time that you were poisoning me… And you succeeded.
But don’t worry, I did my part too.
See you soon!
The Price of Seeing
Rosa María López Alfaro
And I threw up, I threw up, I threw up until I was exhausted, and defenseless I saw everything as it is; my angels fled and now the demons chase me.
Be Careful When Buying Real Estate
José Yazfasel Solís Santiago
The ad was clear, but I understood it too late.
Land for sale, immediate possession.
Now I fight against something strange dwelling within my being.
The Laboratory of Horror
Luis C. Torrico
That night I was cleaning the laboratory when suddenly, it seemed to me that a little jelly-like white mass was wriggling in the sink in the back, as if it were drowning. Driven by intrigue, I approached, but it was still too small to see clearly. I took a glass slide (which was what I had on hand) and exposed it to the microscope lens. Immediately I recognized that unkempt lab coat, the bald spot on the head, and the glasses slipping off… God, I wish I hadn’t seen it! It was me (yes, me) who was drowning.
A Friday Night
Israel Montalvo
A young woman lay on the floor of a hotel room with her neck bitten open. The light of a full moon slipped all the way to that girl’s face. It was midnight in Paris and the detective on duty was trying to make sense of that death. There was a suspect in custody; they found him on the roof staring at the moon and howling. He was naked except for a collar with a metal dog tag that read, «Dennis.» The detective remembered a lost dog poster with that name. In the photo that thing looked like a wolf, not a Belgian Malinois. Disgusted, he shrugged and left the room.
Lineage
Rosaura Béjar Hernández
That photograph has been on the small table in the main hallway of the theater for 200 years, and it’s still the center of attention, he told himself, I have it tattooed in my memory.
He pushed his thoughts aside and returned to the present moment. He has a performance, a piano recital accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra. His nerves tense up. He walks with a firm step and, upon reaching the center of the stage, bows in reverence; the theater is full.
He places his long, strong fingers on the keys of that instrument; percussion is heard, followed by a glissando. The sweep went from left to right; the piano vibrated and filled the atmosphere with uncertainty.
«Who is playing the piano?» they asked, looking at one another.
The hall fell silent; the noise of the silence echoed in every one of the balconies of that theater. At that moment, the pianist Carlos Lozano enters, showing off his histrionic personality.
«It seems my grandfather is welcoming me in a pleasing way,» he says with a crooked smile.
On the Curve
José Luis Perera
The weekend flew by, and they were returning to the capital on a dark night.
She was dozing off and he was driving distracted. Suddenly, on a curve, the unexpected: a woman and a child holding hands. He tried to maneuver to avoid them but there was no way; the car swayed and then slid sideways, a dull thud was felt. His wife woke up screaming in fear. He slowed down and stopped a little further ahead. He got out and ran back to help the woman and child he had struck, but he couldn’t see anyone. He went to the front of the car to assess the damage, and the surprise was enormous, since there was nothing to assess, not a single scratch, from what could be seen in the night and with barely the vehicle’s lights. He started driving again and asked his wife:
«Are you okay?»
She remained mute with her gaze lost in the infinity of the darkness.
«The one who isn’t is you,» a strange voice said.
He turned his face to look at her and froze. The child’s voice in the backseat finished terrifying him.
My Roommate
Paola Alvarez
There’s a monster under my bed. I hear him cry when I go to sleep. Sometimes he whispers thoughts in my ear that terrify me so much my sleep flees the room. Other nights, on the contrary, he simply falls asleep before he can say anything to me.
My mother says I should let him go, but he has been with me for so long that I already feel him as a part of me. What will I do if one day he is no longer there? Who will whisper to me every night until I fall asleep?
Is Anyone Out There?
Karla Barajas
A car parks outside the house. I breathe heavily and stay quiet. I hear the door slam shut. They knock. I hide.
The shadows under the door remain for a few seconds and then move away.
The phone rings. I don’t answer. My heart races. I take a deep breath. I sweat. The same thing always happens when someone arrives, they knock on the door or when the phone rings. My friends say I exaggerate.
The phone rings again. I answer.
«We know you’re in there.»
Gloom
Lara Morales
I have the strange feeling that I am living the exact same day. It’s as if time doesn’t move forward. My sister is always at the foot of the window, asking about Mom. Dad, motionless in the armchair, doesn’t answer her. They look different; they have a sad gaze. The living room clock stopped. I don’t understand what’s happening. We don’t leave the house anymore; the sun doesn’t shine outside. Everything changed that night. Dad said he would make a delicious dinner, but that soup had a strange taste and a foul smell. I didn’t want to eat. Dad convinced me; he insisted that after dinner, everything would be alright. He was crying, maybe because Mom ate a soup just like it and we had to leave her at the cemetery.
Transference in the Woods
Juan Martínez Reyes
The silence crumbles in the dim light, while my hurried footsteps lead me to the thicket. I notice it’s still chasing me. The sinister bird looks at me with its bloodshot eyes from the tree. I feel my body trembling and terror nesting inside me. I can’t look away from those eyes that now seem to be mine, from that shadowy body and those pincers clinging to the branch. Time suspends the night on the horizon. I feel small and defenseless. Now I feel that I have wings and a beak. I fly far, far away to avoid the sinister gaze of that man who is right there in the middle of the woods.
The Sentence
Antonieta Arrecis
She gets into bed. Tries to fall asleep. Shuts her eyes tight. Hugs a pillow. Opens her eyes. The night begins to say goodbye. She hears in the distance the murmur of the day advancing through neighbors’ footsteps and birds chirping. Her chest contracts with a sharp pressure that makes her heart race. A drumming echoing in her head. The alarm will sound soon. Difficulty breathing. Sweating profusely. She can’t cry, but tears spill down her face. She sits up startled. Tries to breathe deeply. She is dying in life. Her sentence is non-negotiable. She hears the door open. Hides among the sheets and cries inconsolably. The scandalous alarm announces the hour has come. She runs to the bathroom. They yell for her to come down for breakfast. She moves forward with the burden of the inevitable. Hides her face behind her hair.
«Well! Looks like you had another bad night,» the father gloats with a smirking grin, savoring every word.
«Everything will get better soon, darling. Today is the special day with daddy,» the aunt innocently tries to motivate the young girl.
The sentence has been read once again. Her breathing catches; her fears overflow. She can’t run away. She is condemned.
Footsteps
Alicia Araoz
Isabel heard footsteps several meters behind her. When they sped up, she turned around, but saw nothing on the well-lit street.
He was panting and sweating. «I was too slow,» he thought. The injection calmed him down.
The following night Isabel heard the footsteps closer, and when they seemed to lunge, she turned around but no one was there.
Upon getting home she looked for that knife with which, in a violent fight, she had deeply wounded her boyfriend, who was now hospitalized, in a coma. She went free because there were no witnesses.
He was exhausted from the effort but turned on because he was so close. The drug put him to sleep.
The following night, the footsteps caught up with Isabel. She was found dead with a stab wound to her head and next to her, besides the knife, there were also curious footprints of bare male feet approaching her.
Her boyfriend’s monitor showed incomprehensibly extreme alterations on those nights. The nurses drugged him.
That last night his agitation and sweating skyrocketed so much that the nurse giving him the sedative insulted him. His vitals dropped, imperceptible.
Curiously, his fist was clenched as if gripping a handle.
When the nurse stepped out, the electroencephalogram spiked. He was thinking, «Get mad, nurse, you’ll hear my footsteps behind you soon enough.»
Blackout
María Alvarado De la Rosa
I arrive home. I try to turn on the living room light; I can’t. I step forward; the light switch gives. There is no light. Everything is submerged in deep darkness. A chill runs down my spine. It is two thirty-four in the morning. I am hungry.
I walk slowly toward the stove; feeling around, I find the matches. I feel someone, something watching me from the back of the patio. I tremble; I light one with a shaking hand. It’s the alcohol, not fear.
I feel watched; I approach the window, the lit match. A terrible cold runs through my body. I press my face against the window.
At the back of the patio I observe a silhouette dressed in white, with messy hair. My match goes out.
I light another. It has turned around; it illuminates its face with a candle. It has seen me. It smiles toothlessly in a macabre way as it gets closer.
The match goes out; I want to light another, I’m scared, I want to run, but… I can’t breathe, my chest hurts. I have fallen to the floor. Massive heart attack.
The door opens. In a nightgown, candle in hand, my mother, who was waiting for me to come home, was trying to fix the fuses so that when I got back drunk from the party I wouldn’t get hurt.
The Similes
Mauro Cartasso
An unsettling uniformity led me to the display window of an antique shop looking for a mirror, but my footsteps felt heavy. The fear turned to panic; a sharp ringing intensified until it became pain on both sides of my head. I felt my thoughts drifting away while the sensation of being watched became unbearable.
I surrendered; I stopped fighting the immersion, so the last sound I heard was just a faint heartbeat, to the point that I only felt the accelerated rhythm of my own heart.
The smell of disinfectant was the first thing my consciousness grasped. My eyes opened with difficulty as I tried to focus on the ceiling. I was in a white room where the silence was absolute, a cold and sterile environment. I observed the open door; it was made of heavy wood.
Then I realized that I hadn’t returned home, that I had arrived at this strange place, where you can only keep a few fragments of the past; I felt trapped inside a cube. Was this a prison inside my own mind?
There I was, replacing the faces of those around me, swapping them for that empty and expressionless image. That soulless mask was my face.
Is It All in My Head?
Gema Herráez Peñas
The changes were subtle. Only I seemed to perceive them, small yet significant. They became concerning when objects started disappearing as if someone or something were harvesting them. However, my parents continued with their daily routine oblivious and indifferent to these alterations. They began to scare me so I didn’t dare say anything. Their attitude changed overnight. They behaved like automatons. They strung together incoherent sentences and their facial expressions consisted merely of a forced, permanent smile. It was as if they were on standby. They wouldn’t eat, or drink, or sleep. I thought about turning to someone but suffered a shock when I did. Relatives, friends, and neighbors were the same. One day there was a knock at the door and I don’t remember anything else. I have woken up and everything seems fine, as if nothing had happened. Did I imagine it? Was it a dream? My mother walks into the bedroom carrying a tray with food in her hands.
«Darling, you’ve been sick and you need to regain your strength.»
I breathe in relief until I focus on the expression on her face. A muffled scream dies in my throat.
Voices
Martin Hernández
After my suicide attempt, the ringing in my ears intensified until it became a recognizable sound; they were voices. Voices ordering me to do terrible things, to kill, to steal, to beat myself. I never listened to them, but they grew until they left me deaf. I started communicating with sign language, because the voices wouldn’t shut up. Seeing that I ignored them, they took shape and stepped out of my mind, although they never left my side. They are here with me, they keep yelling at me, asking me for things. I learned to live with them, I yell at them too, I insult them, but they won’t leave, because they are a part of me. Now I’m looking for a way to get rid of them, of something that was born inside me. A great idea comes to me; I grip the knife firmly and head toward the voices. Right in front of them, in a single slash, I slice my neck open.
It Is Not Me
Margaret Sosa
Who’s there?
I walk. I hear footsteps. I get closer. I ask, Who’s there?
No one answers, no one seems to listen and, if they do listen they cannot answer.
It may be that they don’t want to answer me or perhaps someone else tells them not to.
Not to answer me.
I ask one more time, Who is it? But, once again, no one says anything.
I hear a door slam. The light goes out.
With my hands I caress a rough, damp wall.
It’s raining; my fingers feel the water sliding down the walls.
I’m thirsty; it’s salty.
There is a hole through which my fingers slowly force their way.
The index finger reaches the edge. I push it in a little more and a little more until it pops out, it goes flying out of the socket.
It falls to the floor, slips. The light comes in.
It squeezes, squeezes, squeezes. Chases. Flees. Calls.
Silence!
It is not me. I swear, it is not me.
Until just a little while ago I asked who it was.
I couldn’t answer myself.
Flight
Jeanneth Bohorquez Quevedo
My heart was pounding in my chest while my hurried footsteps took me away from that stranger with the covered face who was chasing me, repeating my name with a raspy voice. Still running, I looked back; he was no longer there, I breathed in relief and slowed my pace. The street was deserted; an icy chill seeped through my clothes. Crossing the street I saw him again; he was right in front, a freezing sweat bathed my forehead; I quickly changed direction and started running once again. My repeated name seemed to touch me. Upon reaching an alleyway I went into it, but to my anguish it was a dead end; I heard his clumsy footsteps dragging along. Without thinking, I slipped into an old building. The silence, the smell of dampness and rot invaded it; my footsteps grew clumsy, collapsing in a corner, while I imagined the stranger brushing past me, I felt his rancid breath. A muffled scream remained trapped in my throat, while a sliver of light filtered in trying to give me away; I curled up falling asleep.
When I woke up, trembling, I stepped out, took a deep breath. «It was a dream,» I kept telling myself, but upon arriving at a nearby plaza, my name rang in my ears; I turned my gaze. A smiling man was waving his hand as he came to meet me.
From the Depths
Carlos Enrique Saldívar
The man, very lively at first, looked closely at the crib, and realized that it was not his baby. Shadowy obscenities of iniquity and skin-flaying transformations bred in the little body that was growing. A sickly abyss opened right there while the individual, petrified, eaten away by the anguished stares, obtained the definitive vision. He mentioned, «I have woken up.»
In His Image and Likeness
Eliana Soza Martínez
It took him several years. It was the most ambitious project he had started, creating an unforgettable character, his own Quixote. He worked by filling out an extensive profile, almost a complete biography. He detailed traumas, fears, secrets, worries, illusions. He wanted a three-dimensional character who resembled his father, but who was more ruthless and reckless. His obsession reached its limit when he started talking to him. After a few months, that man made of ink was the one dictating the actions and decisions of the renowned horror writer.
