—No me cierres todavía —dijo—.
—Excelente escritora. Lástima que falleciera tan pronto.
—¿Falleciera? ¡Si soy yo! —Él la miró con compasión.
—Son veinte euros.
Esa noche llamó a mi puerta.
—¡No puede matarme! ¡Yo soy la escritora!
—No. La escritora soy yo. —Se marchó gritando.
Al día siguiente volvió a la librería.
—¿Es usted la mujer de la portada? ¡Nuria Hernández García! Admiro profundamente su obra. —Ella sonrió.
—Gracias.
Las ratas y el vagabundo
Jorge Antele
Jose Luis Borches Centurion
—No soy ficción— murmuró— soy tu reflejo.
Heidi Carolina Molina Duque
Estaba a tiempo.
Inevitable
Astrid Perellon
Farley Eduardo Olvera Mendez
No sé cuándo empecé a hablar contigo, Jekyll.
Jamás volvió a despertar.
Pie
Arturo Eduardo Medina Oliveros
Empacho cuentero
Sandra Ivonne Sanabria Medina

That Was How He Wanted It
Cristóbal Apanco
Heriberto thought about all the ways the writer wanted to kill him; without a doubt, pain and cruelty awaited him, because, knowing in advance how abject that vile creator was, he decided to be the master, at least, if not of his life, then of his death. He took the pen and plunged it into his chest. When Rodrigo Anatema, the storyteller, came to his notebook and saw the pen with an enormously red stain on the blank page, he thought that was how, exactly in that way, he had wanted Heriberto to die.
Alter Ego
Sandra Luján Orsatti
The fog returned before dusk. She walked to the house with the iron bars, convinced that the nightmare would end there. On a table she found an open notebook. It contained no memories; it wrote the very next step of her feet. Each sentence was born as a key struck somewhere, behind the wind. Upon reaching the last page she read: «When she discovers she is merely my alter ego, she will look up.» She did. Through the mist she made out an illuminated window and a silhouette writing. Then she understood the true horror: the writer also looked up, terrified, because someone was writing her, too.
Outside the Margin
Norma Beatriz Castillo
When the character discovered he only had forty words left, he stopped looking for the door and started looking for the author. «Don’t close me just yet,» he said. «I can still change the ending.» The author hesitated. You have just read that hesitation. If you now imagine that the character escaped, he no longer belongs to the story; he belongs to you.
Uncertain Ending
Rosaura Béjar Hernández
In the dark street, where the streetlamps cast grim, elongated shadows, a murderous hand unleashes its fury upon Estela’s defenseless humanity. In her death throes, with a muffled cry, she calls out to the writer, «This is not the ending I want; I deserve another chance.» With hysterical agility, hands erase the line, he stumbles and falls upon the dagger the victim holds now without strength. A smile graces her carmine lips.
Unfinished Chapter
Rosa Esperanza Sánchez Gracia
The writer got lost in chapter seven. He had invented an infinite forest to lengthen the novel, and now he was inside it. He called out to his characters. No one answered. Exhausted, he lay down under an oak tree with black leaves, just as he had described it, and closed his eyes, wishing to wake up. He opened his eyes and was in his bed. His room, his lamp, his manuscript. He laughed with relief. He picked up his pen and wrote: «At last I escaped.» Then he saw the ink: black, like the leaves. He looked out the window and there was nothing, only darkness. Only a black forest. A forest once again. He understood he had never made it out of the first draft. He never would.
And They Lived Unhappily Ever After
Juana María Rodríguez Arriaga
By some strange turn of events, the witch realized she was only a storybook character, so she used her magic to alter a few lines and create an ending that would make her feel invincible. Upon reaching the altar, the princess gave a radiant smile while the groom gazed at her in love; everyone displayed joy and enjoyed the feast. But the very next day, the prince had his wife locked up, enslaved the town, squandered his fortune, and every night a sinister, spine-chilling laugh could be heard. Although confused by the bizarre ending, the writer liked it so much that he published it just like that.
Rewritten
Nuria Hernández García
She asked at the bookstore for Verses from the Rain… «It’s by Nuria Hernández García.» The bookseller smiled. «An excellent writer. A pity she died so young.» «Died? But that’s me!» He looked at her with pity. «That will be twenty euros.» That night she knocked on my door. «You can’t kill me! I am the writer!» «No. I am the writer.» She walked away screaming. The next day she returned to the bookstore. «Are you the woman on the cover? Nuria Hernández García! I deeply admire your work.» She smiled. «Thank you.»
The Rats and the Vagabond
Jorge Antele
The drunken vagabond falls to the floor and can no longer get up. The old manor casts its fetid breath upon him and makes him hot. The lightning outside continues to illuminate the interior of the abandoned building. More rats appear, surrounding him without making a single sound. Now they are creeping closer to him, slowly. With every flash from outside, more rodents are illuminated, bearing their tiny jaws to him. They cover him completely. His fate is imminent and, then, he remembers that only you, who are reading this, can stop deciphering the characters and avoid reaching the part where he is devoured. It was a feast of flesh.
My Creator
Mario Márquez Sánchez
My creator had put me in the most fantastic stories, he had taken me through unimaginable worlds and, together, we had created the greatest adventures. But in this, my final story, my creator had decided to end me without prior notice, without a tale worthy of his best character. I only watched as he wrote the words that brought an end to my existence: «The man took the weapon, aimed it at his temple, and fired…» The writer stopped typing his last story, took the weapon, aimed it at his temple, and…
Part of the Hunt
Karla Barajas
He moved in with his cat. He buys rice and birdseed. He mixes it with milk, although the bag warns it isn’t fit for human consumption. He eats and scatters the leftovers across the floor and the rooftops. The birds descend, the cat does the rest. Eventually, pigeons and grackles are not enough. Pets vanish. I know you lost yours. You put up flyers, and hope someone will return it to you. No one will. The boy learned that large prey make for better stories. This is one of them. If you closed this story to go look for your pet, it was too late.
The Mirror of the Pen
Jose Luis Borches Centurion
The protagonist looked up. «Who is writing these words?» he asked with a trembling voice. The narrator hesitated and the pen slipped from my hands. The silence became unbearable. Was I inventing him, or was he dictating to me? The character advanced toward the margin of the page, touched the letters, and discovered they burned like embers. «I am not fiction,» he murmured, «I am your reflection.» Then I understood that every written word was also a wound in me, and that upon closing the book, perhaps I would be the one trapped in his story, condemned to exist among metaphors, silences, and infinite echoes.
The Final Period
Norma Beatriz Castillo
«Don’t close me just yet,» the character said. The writer looked up. He could have sworn no one else was in the room. «I just need a final period.» «I know. From the very first line I knew this was a short story. What I didn’t know was that it would be so short.» The writer hesitated. He erased one word, added another, lengthened a sentence. «Thank you,» the character whispered. «You just gave me a few more seconds of life.» The writer smiled and wrote the final period. But someone, upon reading these lines, opened the story again. And the character took another breath.
The Rebel
Ana María Abad García
Crouched on page seventy-two, I impatiently await the next reader; hiding behind the library door and armed with a dagger, I hope to surprise my murderer. I am already sick of him being the one to conquer the beautiful woman I’m told appears in the following chapter. For once, I will be the hero. Anyway, I am not getting my hopes up; I know that as soon as the writer finds out, he will put me back in my place. But at least, during this reading, I will be able to find out how the novel ends.
Treasure Island
Rosalía Guerrero Jordán
The boy kept turning the pages of my book without paying attention. He was making me dizzy, me, who has sailed the seven seas with a wooden leg and one eye short! And the man hasn’t been born yet who can make me lose my balance! That’s why I leaped between two pages and slashed his beardless face with my cutlass. When he saw me on the table, with Captain Flint on my shoulder, he slammed the book shut. Now we are looking for the way back to the sea. But he has ended up worse; no one believes him when he says Long John Silver wounded him.
Title Change
Natividad Villar Martínez
And what can I tell you of this condition of mine, where I move objects around, see future events, or manage to converse with those who are gone. Well, I don’t think my creator expected this; in fact, the story he proposed was a family saga, where the fourth generation recounted through a great-grandmother’s notebooks the entire family history, but I, the great-grandmother, started giving him hell with my incursions after he killed me off, and the title he had planned as «Legacy», he changed at the last minute to «The House of the Spirits».
The Unwanted Instructions
Néstor Rubén Giménez
In the library, the reader opened Tome MCCCIV. On the final page, he read: «…And the reader closed the book and opened Tome MCCCV.» Intrigued, he searched for the volume. Inside, he found a set of instructions: he had to choose whether the protagonist would go mad or discover that the universe could fit inside a typo. Choosing one meant canceling out the other. He refused to let the weight of the story depend on him. Disappointed, he threw the tome down the stairwell. Upon impact at the bottom, he saw a cloud of dust rise and heard the crunch of pages destined never to be read by anyone.
Loreta and I
Antonieta Arrecis
She wrote and crossed out. «Get out of there!» She scribbled over the exclamation and continued writing. The explosions echoed while… she scratched out the whole sentence in frustration and screamed, pounding the table. «What am I going to do? I haven’t made any progress in my writing for months. With this new book, Loreta’s story would become a saga.» Suddenly, everything around her was disappearing, and she recognized the cursor advancing, deleting all the narration. She ran, trying not to be deleted, without success. Loreta was the author, and she pressed the «delete» key to rewrite the narrative of her character, Antonieta, who, ever the dreamer, fancied herself a writer, poet, and storyteller.
Paper Soul
Lara Morales
Alma collected horror stories. While strolling through a book fair, a cover caught her attention: a young woman lay inside a coffin. She bought it immediately. Settled in her armchair, she read: «She woke up inside a narrow space. She tried to scream, but no one could hear her from her grave.» Alma, intrigued, tried to turn the page, but couldn’t move. Inexplicably, she found herself inside a coffin. Desperate, she pounded on the lid; it gave way like a sheet of paper. Upon getting out, she appeared on the book’s cover. The young woman in the coffin had her face. I closed the book. Trembling, I opened it again. I tried to turn the page.
Terrible Situation
Carlos Enrique Saldívar
I was created to be part of the story of a horror and mystery writer. At every moment, my «life» repeats itself; I am afraid, they chase me, they catch me, and, at the end of the novel, they tear me to pieces. I feel so much pain. It happens all over again every time someone reads the book, and far too many people do. I cannot escape; I am locked in a paper prison. I will not manage to kill my author, though it would be of no use as long as the work remains in print. The worst part is that I cannot change my fictional destiny; I would like to leave, but I am a prisoner, a slave. I am in hell.
Cupid in Agony
Daniela Rosales Medina
The arrow pierces my heart, and the poison, already coursing through my veins, grows thicker by the second. I fear the queen of the mind will discover my clumsiness. She rolls her eyes, observes me in my misfortune, and is not moved, but rather smiles at my torment. It is all her fault, because as an alchemist of words and master of my spirit, she knew this was going to happen. She was the one who wrote this story; she, like a magician with her wand, understood that between her hands and her pages she had this Roman god at her mercy.
Errata
Maribel Sánchez Matías
Upon waking, you found the newspaper on the table: «Woman Murdered by Her Partner.» The article bore your face. In the bedroom, he was still sleeping. You returned to the paper. The date: today. You reread my notes in the margin and understood that the ending was already decided. I managed to write it an instant before you opened your eyes. I still had the chance to correct it. You knew that, and yet, you couldn’t trust it. That is why you abandoned the page and took the knife.
I Am
Brian Montero
I hear rhythmic thuds, the more thuds, the more conscious of myself I am, I begin to have memories of some things, glimpses of a life, my clothes, elegant and my pleasant appearance, in my hand a watch with Roman numerals, I feel the instinct to walk the streets, the others do not notice my presence, at my side I feel something rigid, it is a revolver, I feel the instinct to head to a place, to take a man’s life, the rhythmic thuds continue, I know where to go, I am a fictional character now I know it, and I can do nothing.
Clean Slate
Jessica Le Cuore
When she knew he was going to finish her off, she wanted to beg him, to plead with him not to delete her, that she deserved a chance to keep existing. But it was impossible… With what voice, if she had been silenced forever by becoming a character discarded by that ruthless writer?
Cure for Madness
Heidi Carolina Molina Duque
After so much struggling, at last! He was winning the battle against the windmill. But… Sancho had lost his life during the combat. The victorious Quixote pulled the bloody arrow from that inert body! Cervantes noticed the unforgivable error. Now it fell to him… «Silence witnesses, clean up such a disaster, and find a cure for madness.»
The Judgment
Luis Ignacio Muñoz
After dying, writers had to overcome their own particular hell, the one they had created in their work, and submit themselves to the tyranny and hatred of their characters; because now they were the ones who decided their fate according to the role they had been assigned in their novels and stories.
Reading Can Change Our Lives
Guisela López
I fell asleep reading The Wizard of Oz, so when I found out a tornado had appeared in my city, I couldn’t help but wonder, had it escaped from the volume I still held in my hands? I dismissed the idea as quickly as it appeared, but perhaps I shouldn’t have been so hasty, because at the end of the news broadcast, a young woman appeared to give the weather report in the «Emerald City.» At that point I thought maybe I was dreaming and needed to wake up. But my aunt interrupted me, screaming that the Wicked Witch of the West had just come through the window.
The Beast
Erick Daniel Villamil Ramírez
I walk to the door, and with gun in hand I wait. I could hear the noises on the other side of the paper. I could guess what was on the other side, the strange creature that fed on his friends; he knew he would face it and that he would die, it wasn’t his story, but he knew he was safe there until the reader wanted to turn the page.
Trash Can
María de Lourdes Pedraza Vargas
«Kill me,» she said with certainty, right before the writer crumpled the page.
Humanity
Iván Alberto Gutiérrez
I will continue this massacre unless you grant me the final period.
Continuity
Claudia Sánchez
Everything had been carefully planned, but now he hesitated. Indeed, the dogs were not barking, and the light on indicated that he was reading his novel in the green armchair of the main living room. He figured he couldn’t have reached the final chapter yet. He was on time. He threw the dagger far away and headed for the door. They would resolve it like gentlemen. After all, he hated novels with violent endings.
Manual for Disappearing
Julio César Aguilar
The narrator opened this page searching for an ending, but found the reader correcting every sentence. So he decided to hide among the margins, where discarded words founded cities. From there he wrote: «If you continue, I will disappear.» The reader smiled and kept going. The story, obedient, began to erase itself, except for this last sentence, which insists on pretending it still exists, while you invent it again with every glance, denying any definitive closure, because the story always writes whoever believes they are reading it, even if no one remembers where it started, or who first imagined this shared instant between the two, silently, now, here, still, reading, writing, together, always. The End.
Dispute and Escape
Luis C. Torrico
I don’t know if the one writing is him or me; after all, we both know that the characters in our story will go fleeing before the final outcome happens. But while I was thinking about how to convince them to come back so we could continue the story, the other had already given them up for lost.
Inevitable
Astrid Perellon
If you have made it this far, you have seen so many letters in your life emerging before your eyes… Like a divine plan. Even when they sprout beneath your fingers, they still feel more like dictations, less like creations. Suddenly, you protest and stop reading and writing. Defying destiny. Until you recognize that your rebellion is merely the knot of a story you cannot stop, and whose outcome we all know because we are heading there. Inevitably.
Double Crime
Analia Romero Martín
After the gunshot, the writer’s body collapsed onto the keyboard. Delete did its thing, and the unauthorized biography died without being told.
The Paradox of the Sleeping Colossus
Antonio Arjona Huelgas
And after so much time, the colossus would awaken, monstrous and enraged by the arrival of the warrior who was meant to kill it. But if he did not arrive, the creature remained lethargic, dead. It resurrected only to die again. Thus, the wandering warrior embarked on his journey to resurrect his beloved when a player in a different world turned on the console. And here, a reader activated the cycle traced by an anonymous writer, upon reading about the player, the warrior, and the colossus.
Instructions for Being Afraid
Farley Eduardo Olvera Mendez
Fear can arise from watching horror movies, having nightmares, or listening to certain legends. You will fear that something from that movie will become real, that your nightmare will come to life, that a person, or something, from the legend will appear. Every noise, every object the wind moves, every shadow you see, you will connect to what you saw, imagined, or were told. Until that something touches your back and speaks to you. Turn around!
Worlds
Alicia Araoz
While waiting in the old colonial house, the little black mazamorrero saw a book. He touched it, and his fingers sank in. Amazed, he passed his arm and his body through. He arrived in another room just as the door was opening. A little girl appeared. The little mazamorrero told her how he had arrived, and the girl, taking his hand, led him out for a walk. The little boy didn’t see horses or houses with tile roofs. There was a lot of noise, and when it got dark, he decided to return. They said goodbye in front of the book. The little boy ran out of the house, and as the girl looked at her history book, she saw the little mazamorrero looking back at her, smiling.
Final Period
Nereidy Velásquez
The bride, who is already at the altar facing the groom, tries to flee at the question: «Do you take him as your husband?» She discovers she cannot move. He is inspired; the words flow without stopping. He won’t let her go. He jams her feet into the margins of the paper as he writes the end of the story. She finds a possible way out, another ending. But the pencil is faster. The final period is an inevitable abyss from which she cannot escape.
The Escape
Rosa María López Alfaro
He wanted to lock me up, but I was already out of the book.
The Duality of Being
Angela V. del Toro Mesa
I don’t know when I started talking to you, Jekyll. Maybe it was when I understood you weren’t just a 19th-century character, but someone who still breathes in the letters of writers. In those of us who keep reading you. Sometimes you approach me from Stevenson’s pages, others, from hypertexts. Because, even if you change your name, you are still you. And I remain a reader trying to understand you… Today, immersed in reading Mr. Hyde’s will. I search in you—in your duality—for those dark zones I still do not dare to name.
Elías
Lilian Aguilar de Andreutti
Fascinating, Elías’s journey. Incredible, the narration of his adventures. He explored the Sumerian lands with Ea. He saw scribes carving clay tablets and painters coloring Egyptian tombs, or Mayan murals. He sailed in Viking ships and Greek triremes. He shared games with the children of the Lord of Sipán and the famous Atahualpa. Elías never convinced his listeners of the veracity of his travels. Some suspected he was from another time, but no one, an addicted reader.
Alive
Edgardo Trejo
Upon waking I closed my eyes, I fell into fiction, time stopped, the heavy tombstone of reality no longer buries me, ships set sail for distant empty spaces, I have returned to life.
A Dream?
María Alvarado De la Rosa
María went to bed ready to rest. By her side, in utter peace, her husband snored. At dawn she woke up. Her beloved husband was driving a board with long, sharp nails into her head with a single blow. The pain made her faint. She opened her eyes. She had been dreaming. At that instant, her husband struck her with the board of nails. María woke up, screaming. Her startled husband listened to her recount her dreams. At the end of the agitated monologue, he lifted a board with nails and drove it into María’s head, who… Never woke up again.
Foot
Arturo Eduardo Medina Oliveros
Depth of sleep. A Cuban snake coiled around my foot. How to step on the sand again? The snake speaks cheerful tongue twisters. Then the snake dreams it reads a slow poem of love. My poisoned foot? The sweet poison flows through my blood. A red star in the sky. Reddish sands. And the snake dragging my foot to the sea. And me translating the tongue twister with my feet. And me reading the poem with my feet. On the shore my foot survives while the snake keeps coiling around it.
Fortuitous Affliction
María Isabel Grijalva de León
Taking care of my granddaughter Nirla’s pet was a ritual. Playful, she escaped, I saw her go into a burrow, trying to catch her we sank, reaching the bottom, I saw a door, we went through it… A beautiful girl appeared there. «Who are you?» I asked. «Alice. And you?» «Mary. Alice, from the story?» «Yes. What are you looking for?» «My rabbit. I’m taking her.» «She’s with the White Rabbit, quite the Don Juan.» Alice suddenly tells me… «Flee Mary, the hedgehogs will tear you to shreds!» I got home panting, tormented, and poor me… Fast asleep in her cage was «Whiteball»!
Selfish
Eliana Soza Martínez
The argument started in the writer’s head. His protagonist didn’t want to sacrifice his life to create an ending of redemption. When the author wrote about his main character, the latter disappeared. So he decided to change the story. That night he had a nightmare in which, looking in the mirror, he transformed into his wife. The next day, he couldn’t defeat the blank page. Meanwhile, his wife wrote non-stop. She made him read her story with a protagonist similar to the one he had rejected, but the ending was open.
Storyteller’s Indigestion
Sandra Ivonne Sanabria Medina
There was a man who lived off stories. Part of his family was already sick of it, and another couldn’t live without his stories. Some would tell him, «Stop making up stories!» Others would complain, «I’m tired of your stories!» It didn’t matter what they told him. He gathered words together, to keep spinning tales. Like that storyteller, one day I got a terrible indigestion. I spent days in the bathroom, trying to get the words out. How could I forget? My grandmother called it «Storyteller’s Indigestion.» She said that every so often, that happens to the storytellers in our family. If she were alive, she would be enjoying my story.
Unfinished Science Fiction Story
Martin Hernández
«The inhabitants of planet ‘Tlön’ were still at war against the humanoids from planet ‘Uqbar.’ The former leader, who lost his life in the last battle, left his only daughter, the warrior ‘Orbis,’ at the head of the army, along with her cybernetic ship, the powerful ‘Tertius’; the battle…» I interrupt the writing of my science fiction story to look at my cell phone; on the screen, words and images repeat: «Pandemic,» «Elon,» «War,» «Drugs,» «Trump,» «AI,» «Robots,» «Hadron Collider,» «Conspiracies,» «Epstein.» Reality was writing the best non-fiction story ever written.
